For decades before the white man arrived on the scene the plains area of the country now known as the United States belonged to the roving tribes of Native Americans. This long stretch of prairie provided food, clothing and shelter to these people. Great herds of buffalo roamed from Canada south. Many followed these herds, drifting south with the winters and north in the summers. Oklahoma, , the Kiowa, Comanche, Kiowa-Apache, and for a while, a band of Chiricahua Apache.
